Movies are sometimes based on novels, sometimes on stories from real life. Opera is no different. "The Grapes of Wrath," a novel based on real life, made a great movie. Why wouldn't it be suitable for opera as well?
Rick Ian Gordon, 53, a New York composer of songs, musicals and operas, wrote the music for "The Grapes of Wrath" to a libretto by Michael Korie, who also wrote the words to the opera "Harvey Milk."
A scaled-down version of it will be presented Saturday evening, for free, at the Gates Performing Arts Center at Hawaii Preparatory Academy in Waimea/Kamuela as part of the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, which brings diverse concerts to the Big Island every summer. It will be my pleasure to introduce the evening.
