Poi-fect!
Sometimes there are things you have just got to have… and I mean right now!
These strong urges are usually related to things edible and are triggered by a variety of stimuli.
For me, driving by Tamura’s on Waialae Avenue sends me into a poi and poke frenzy!
Incriminating evidence below…

Julie, Julia and Moi

My name may be Cooke but that doesn’t mean I know my way around the kitchen. The most complex recipes I’ve tried require a “stop and stir” halfway through the 5 minute microwave cycle. But I know fine dining when I see it. I just don’t know which fork to use.
Thank goodness for people like Chef Mavro, who can actually prepare cuisine like that featured in the film Julie & Julia. His three course Tribute to Julia Child Menu was fun and delectible!
Don’t worry, they won’t ask you to pronounce Salade Frisee Aux Lardons before serving it.

Boeuf Bourguignon is the featured main course…

and for dessert, Tarte Tatin.

My group passed on the optional “reverse martini”, apparently a favorite of Julia’s; three parts vermouth and one part gin. We did order the bottle of 2007 Morgon Cru Du Beaujolais and it was a tasty companion to the meal.
Urban Mix Plate blogger and PR maven Melissa Chang was across the room enjoying Chef Mavro’s offering and unlike me, remembered to photograph each course before digging in. Thank you, Melissa for sharing.
See the movie! TASTE the movie! Bon Appetit!

Inspiring Perspiring!

What great fun yesterday morning during my Sunrise Training Camp! I got to hang out and work out with Megan Clark’s “Hawaii’s Smallest Winners” group at Ala Moana Beach. It’s a 12-week weight loss program that’s part of her Extreme Beach Boot Camp. I BARELY SURVIVED!!!
But what an inspiring group!! Boot Camper Jessica will end her 12-weeks today (Friday 8/21/09) and will weigh in at an estimated 15-18 pounds off her starting weight. Good job Jessica!
And then there’s Danee, who has lost 46 pounds over a 24-week period. Her Navy husband has been away at sea the entire time! Hmmmm, that homecoming should be interesting ;-)
Mahalo Megan and a big thank you to all your “campers” for the inspiration!

Glorious Change
When you are away from friends and family for a while, they change. People get fit/fat, start/lose jobs, get married/divorced – all normal occurrences in the circle of life.
If you’re lucky, some of your friends and family have babies. This is what I would call a glorious change.
KGMB9’s news anchor Tannya Joaquin and videographer Rick Pike would be good examples, although they would both likely tell you that for them the word “change” is used primarily in sentences that also contain the word “diaper.”
I am truly enjoying getting to know the babies who are growing my circle of family and friends. Change is good, particularly glorious change.

Did you read Oscar Valenzuela’s blog today? After addressing a video challenge with some very sophisticated and high-tech thinking, it turned out that low-tech was the way to go. He even provided a low-tech graphic to illustrate how the problem was solved.
It’s a great example of the innovative thinking our team of video journalists use every day to help make our newcasts visually rich and interesting.
When I asked Oscar if he would share his graphic with me for my blog today he said, “Sure, I just need to track it down.”
Little did I know.

Thanks Oscar!! And thank you to our team of video journalists for their persistance and professionalism every day!

A Mustache at 6 Years Old????
Filed Under Dan's Posts | Leave a Comment
Having a mustache is pretty unusual for a 6 year old kid, no question about it.
When I first heard about this phenomenon I couldn’t believe it, especially since the mustache was on a kid I knew and I was on my way to his 6th birthday party. Why, I had seen him only a few days before and his baby face showed no signs of imminent facial hair. Nary a wisp of whiskers.
Could the mustache be an indication of some health issue? This sweet little boy doesn’t deserve this, I thought.
Imagine my relief when I saw him.

Crying Wolf
It’s been a pretty mellow hurricane season for the Central Pacific and that’s right in line with preseason predictions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Those predictions along with the length of time since our last direct hit from a hurricane may have you thinking the KGMB9 Weather Team is crying wolf when we urge you to prepare for the worst. It’s only human. After all, only 5 hurricanes have caused significant damage to the islands in the last 50+ years.
But now that Felicia and Enrique are strengthening and moving our direction, I hope we can get your attention.
Ask anyone on Kauai who lived through Hurricane Iniki and its aftermath. They will tell you how important it is to be prepared.
The KGMB9 Weather Team has put together all the information you need in a hurricane emergency:
- Preparedness
- Survival Kit
- Contact Numbers
- Oahu Shelters
- Neighbor Island Shelters
- Pet Preparedness
- Hurricane Tracker
There’s more on the KGMB9.com weather page including a series of weather videos from a televised special called Eye on the Sky that will help you get ready.
Will we all be sitting here next week calling this another false alarm? I certainly hope so. But just in case, let’s get prepared.

No, I am not wearing ruby red slippers but I agree with Dorothy’s sentiment. I have been back in Honolulu for about two weeks and the expressions of aloha have been wonderful.
“Welcome home,” offers the waitress at Helena’s.
“When do you start?” asks the teller at Bank of Hawaii.
The recognition is due to Ms. Applebox and her team’s fresh and fun promos. But the genuine warmth and interest? Well, that’s real. That’s Hawaii. It’s a big part of why I love this place and call it home.
For those of us not born here, calling Hawaii home is a privilege and it’s not something that can be said casually. It’s earned over time by accepting, learning, and being respectful of the many cultures that co-exist here.
No, I’m not in Kansas anymore (I’m actually from Missouri but metaphors allow a 500 mile variance) and I am very glad to be home. See you on Sunrise on August 24th!!
